Freedom of Information Data on knife crime cautions given to under 18's from the Sun online
A freedom of information request has revealed that there was a 23% increase in cautions handed out to under 18's for knife possession in 2017.
This increase is consistent with the general increase in arrests for knife processions and stabbings which is up nationally by 26% in the same period.
While we have concerns that these figures may send out the wrong message to young people, we also accept that in a small number of cases there will be mitigating circumstances which justify the sanction of a caution.
We are however deeply concerned that 40% of offenders who are charged for a second time with knife possession escape a custodial sentence.
